Twitter Agrees to Set up Office in Nigeria

From early June, the federal government of Nigeria and Twitter have had some issues, this was as a result of Twitter deleting a controversial post made by Nigerian President Buhari after which the Nigerian government suspended Twitter’s operations indefinitely.

Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Culture said the suspension was because of “persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.”

India is the only other country to request Twitter to set up a local office to handle complaints, now Twitter has agreed to open an office in Nigeria, after which the government has announced they would lift the Twitter ban soon.

The ban on Twitter drew condemnation from the social media platform itself, from Nigerian civil society groups including some that sued the government over it, from numerous Nigerian users, and from the U.S. government.
